A new alliance between the Council, a local School and a Pub is aiming to help clean up and preserve a large, well used Leamington Country Park.
The ‘Friends of Newbold Common’ are aiming to both help the local environment and encourage greater use of the fantastic facilities, including the 18 hole golf course, leisure centre and family friendly pub.
The group was out and about the park for their first event, a litter pick, on Sunday 24 September.
Becky Davies, Warwick District Council’s Recycling Officer will be on hand at the event to give guidance and to explain the importance of recycling. Keen to emphasise that all the waste that is collected will be sorted and recycled and said: “This is a great opportunity to help demonstrate we care about our local environment. We hope this initiate will help people become more conscious about not dropping litter, and cleaning up after themselves”.
The launch was also attended by the Environment Club from the nearby St. Paul’s School. Head teacher Peter Farrell said “The school welcomes this wonderful new initiative as a means of helping our children learn and understand some of the environmental issues that challenge us all and to extend our involvement with the community.” The school intends to broaden the environmental projects they already undertake along their boundaries.
Nick Wormald, licensee of The Newbold Comyn Arms, has been elected acting Chairman of the Group. Nick said the group hopes to identify all the clubs and societies that use the park and to more widely promote the facilities that are available. “I would ask that anyone who has an interest in the park contact us so that we can incorporate their views in the future direction of this Group. People can do this by contacting me at The Newbold Comyn Arms. In time, we hope to more widely promote the wonderful amenities that help make up the park”, Nick said.
Also assisting the scheme is Jack Watkins from the Warwickshire Wildlife Trust, and Councillor David Shilton who had the idea to create the group earlier in the year.
