One of our Elephants is Missing!
During the course of weekend, Saturday 12th August, one of three bronze elephants was removed from its setting, as part of a circular marble seat, at the courtyard in front of the newly opened cultural quarter, at Spencer Yard, Leamington Spa.
The elephants were part of a public art display kindly donated to the project by the Royal Priors Shopping Centre. It is estimated that each elephant weighs in at around a tonne!
"This was clearly a professional job, involving the use of specialist tools and must have created considerable noise in smashing through the secured mountings" said Councillor Balvinder Gill, Portfolio Holder for Cultural Services. " We would join with Warwickshire Police in appealing for anyone who may have witnessed this despicable act to come forward." he added.
The two remaining elephants and the remains of the marble plinth have been removed for safekeeping. The council is investigating a possible insurance claim, and will be looking in to ways of securely returning the remaining exhibits to public display.
