Heritage Open Days

Another rare opportunity to visit historic buildings, not normally open to the public, has been organised by Warwick District Council’s conservation team.

Following the success of last year’s event, some 26 local properties (including two new properties) will be throwing open their doors between Thursday September 7th and Sunday September 10th. It’s all part of the National “Heritage Open Days” scheme sponsored by the Civic Trust and English Heritage.

There will be a chance, for example, to visit the Sikh Temple in Queenway, and the Real Tennis Court Club, both in Leamington Spa and three organised walks to explore historic Kenilworth.

By popular request, there will also be another chance to see the stunning interior of 83 Upper Holly Walk in Leamington Spa and the evocative ruins at Guys Cliffe House. Other favourites from past years will be open again including the Court House in Warwick and the atmospheric interior of St. Johns Church in Leamington Spa, together with Leamington Spa Town Hall with its recently redecorated hall and staircase. More up-to-date architecture will also feature, too, in the shape of Warwick Baptist Church.

“This is a once a year opportunity to experience the Districts Heritage and gain access to historic buildings and Churches not open on a regular basis,” said Warwick District Council’s Alan Mayes, who is responsible for conservation issues across the district.

In order to fully publicise all the events a special exhibition is planned for the 2nd September at the Royal Priors Shopping Centre from 10am to 4pm. Representatives from the Council, together with local amenity groups will be on hand to answer any questions and explain more about their work.

At the exhibition there will be an opportunity to collect your free heritage open day’s mug and take part in a free draw to win a family ticket to Warwick Castle.
