Non-domestic rates (often called business rates) are the way in which businesses and other occupiers of non-domestic property contribute towards the costs of local authority services.

Business rates deferral scheme 2009/10
The government announced on 31/03/2009 that it will bring forward regulations to enable businesses to defer payment of 60% of the increase in their 2009-10 business rate bills until 2010-11 and 2011-12. Brief timetable of events;
- April 2009 - Information flyer to be sent to all business rate payers
- July 2009 - Regulations hope to be in place allowing the scheme to start
- End July 2009 - Local Authorities to write to ratepayers offering option of deferral
