Temporary event notice

Temporary event notice guidance

A Temporary Event Notice is required if you intend to carry out a licensable activity on unlicensed premises or wish to operate outside the terms of your existing Premises Licence or Club Premises Certificate.

A licensable activity is one or more of the following:

  • The sale or supply of alcohol.
  • Regulated entertainment (i.e. music, singing or dancing)
  • Provisions of late night refreshment (hot food or drink between the hours of 2300 and 0500)

Apply for a temporary event notice (TEN)

From the 25th April 2012, a new notice form must be used. There are now two types of notices, although the same form will be used for both. TENs may now be for a period of 168 hours, but there is an overriding limit of 12 notices per premises per calendar year and a maximum of 21 days per premises per calendar year.

  1. Normal TEN - This must be submitted a minimum of 10 clear working days before the event, not counting the day of the event or the day it is received. The Police and Environmental Health will now be able to object on any one or more of the four licensing objectives under the Licensing Act 2003. Conditions may also be added to the notice.
  2. Late TEN - This must be submitted between 5 and 9 clear working days before the event, not counting the day of the event or the day it is received. You must tick the box on the form stating that it is a late TEN. If the Police or Environmental Health object, the event may not go ahead. There is no appeal to this decision
