Art Gallery & Museum - what’s in the Collections

The Art Gallery & Museum has a permanent collection of over 10,000 objects in the fields of art, crafts, sculpture, local and social history, archaeology and ethnography. Most have been donated by local people, beginning in the 1860s and continuing to the present day.

The Art Gallery & Museum continues to collect by donation and purchase in the fields of art, crafts, sculpture and local and social history, following the guidelines set out in the Acquisition and Disposal Policy (62kb, PDF).

Digitising the collections - 'Tapping In'

In November 2006 The Art Gallery & Museum began an 18 months project to digitise the collections. The project, now nearly completed, has created an electronic archive documenting all 10,000 items in the collections, together with pictures of around 3,500 of the most important. The archive is accessible through a website and through computers in the galleries. The project has been carried out in partnership with Warwickshire County Council, with financial support from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Medical History

The Art Gallery & Museum has adopted Medical History as a new area for collecting since the move to the Royal Pump Rooms in 1999. This reflects the history of the building as a centre for medical treatments, especially hydrotherapy and physiotherapy, for nearly two centuries.

A major step forward in this area has been the acquisition of work by Damian Hirst and other contemporary artists as part of the Medicate project carried out with the support of the Wellcome Trust between 1999 and 2005.  To find out more about the project and its associated programme of innovative exhibitions and events visit:  http://www.medicate.org.uk/
