Conservation areas

Leamington from the air

Conservation areas are areas of special architectural or historic interest, the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance.  They are designated by the Council and include town centres, villages, and residential areas.

If you wish to make changes to a property or develop land within a conservation area, you should check with the Council what restrictions may be in place before starting works.  Land and property within a conservation area may have extra planning restrictions in place in order to protect the character of the area.

Warwick District contains 29 conservation areas. These are periodically reviewed to ensure they remain appropriate and all areas have been subject to a review since 2003.

A plan showing the boundary of each area can be downloaded from the list at the bottom of this page. You can also check whether a property is in a conservation area by entering the address or postcode and selecting Planning and Development from the options listed.

Conservation Area Advice and Publications

The Council has produced a number of documents that give advice to owners of properties in conservation areas. General advice can be found within Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas (226kb, PDF) and Historic Buildings: A Development Guide (1.6MB, PDF).

The Council have also prepared more specific guidance for the Urban Conservation Areas of Royal Leamington Spa, Warwick, Kenilworth and Whitnash. This document is available as a full colour document to purchase for £10 from the Council Offices, or you can purchase online and we can send you a copy by post for £15.  Alternatively, you can download a copy free of charge below.  The document has been split into several pdf files and they are large files so may take some time to download.

In addition, there are free advice leaflets for each of the rural conservation areas which are available from the Council Offices and can be downloaded below.
